BREAKING: New Hungarian Rave Site Opens Doors for First and Last Time, Club Results in Paprikash (So True!)
On January 12th, 2025, the Number Thy in Budapest class found themselves in the middle of a daunting task. Setting out to use freshly learned Hungarian, these students went to a local market. There they were able to buy fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, and 4kg of bread. All for the purpose of cooking to make a class dish. What our students didn't know was the adventure they would have along the way resulting in attending one of Hungary's hottest rave spots.
Students were split into five groups, each with their own specific grocery list. Benji Zupfer'27 was quoted saying, "J'adore la marche parce que mon coeur est a la maison". Other students echoed his sentiment as they bought their own fruit for a midmorning breakfast. Moral was high, but frantic as buying food in Hungarian proved more challenging then thought.Pictured left to right and top to bottom, Akos, Joe '26, Benji '27, Charlotte Mock '26, Will Wonka '27, and Pretty Alex '27. After completing their grocery runs the teens were led by courageous professor Berliner to Babylon (Not Depicted) where they were then tasked with cooking Paprikash. Each student was assigned a battle station so graciously set up by the wonderful Emese. Tasks included dicing onions, peeling potatoes and stripping sausages. Through this gauntlet of challenges our students prevailed and successfully made three dishes of Paprikash, salad, and a bread pudding.
It was while cooking that our story really takes shape. A certain band of students set out to make a vegetarian Paprikash, but were met with opposition at every turn. First having to battle to have three cutting boards and even a space to work in, our students prevailed. Next was getting all of the ingredients that had been promised to them as others had unknowingly taken them. Lastly, was keeping themselves entertained while being separated from the rest of the party.
Such entertainment came in the form of a cooking rave. At first the music was to fill the silence in between conversation, but then it slowly evolved to be some of the best House hits of the decades. Then the lights started turning off and flashlights started turning on. Soon students were swaying and bumping heads to the electric beat. It was at this point that cooking Paprikash also meant raving. The room was a buzz of activity and energy. Each student demonstrating their own unique dancing style and creativity. While one may think dancing a lights moving would be a huge distraction, the students were able to finish and prepare their dish on time.
After such a fun day, all were able to enjoy the tasty food prepared and have a good time. The one question remaining is what will happen to Club Babylon, will it ever open again? Will it be in the same location, and more importantly will it ever be the same?? Will DJ BZB and Wavy Wonton make a return in Budapest? Who knows.
